Our History
"Memorials are all about the remembrance of our departed loved ones.
Therefore they should be respectful in their design, their location, and their approach."
The late Dato' Choo Ching Hwa
Nilai Memorial Park was a dream transformed into reality when it was opened to the public in 1991. It is the brainchild of the late Dato' Choo Ching Hwa who pioneered the development of the modern, professionally planned, park-like eternal resting places for the departed loved ones in Malaysia.
The idea has been pollinated as for back as 1971, when his father passed away and was interred in a cemetery, traditionally provided and managed by ethnic welfare associations which was overgrown with weeds and wild grasses, where roads and walkways were virtually non-existent.
Educated in Chinese and English in Malaysia, having studied and qualified as an accountant in Australia, Dato' Choo had benefited from cultures of the East and the West.
Imbued with a deep sense of filial piety, he could not countenance the unkempt condition, the eerie atmosphere of the cemetery, and the difficult accessibility to his late father's tomb. All these served to deter the family members from visiting and paying their respects as often as they had wanted to.
Dissatisfaction built-up over the years led him to spearhead the research of the modern memorial parks in Malaysia in the early 1980s. Persistent with his vision, he made numerous visits, often with his top executives, to Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines and the United States in mid 1980s to study all facets of modern memorial park planning, development, management and operations.
These efforts culminated in the establishment of today's Nilai Memorial Park.
